When a thunderstorm dissipates, a column of air sometimes will rush toward the ground, becoming very hot and dry. It happened in Georgetown yesterday morning.
Moisture in the downdraft evaporates as the air plunges toward the earth's surface. At first, evaporation cools the air, causing it to become"negatively buoyant," meaning that it moves faster and faster toward the ground.
Once the moisture has evaporated, the downdraft stops cooling, and the dry air starts to heat up due to compression.10 to 20 degrees in a few minutesTemperatures have been known to climb above 120 degrees and stay there for several hours before returning to normal. One such heatburst hit Wichita, Kansas, on June 9, 2011, NOAA reports.
