Electric vehicles (EVs) lose range in cold temperatures due to battery efficiency and cabin heating demands. However, heat pumps, commonly used in buildings for energy-efficient heating, can significantly mitigate this range reduction in EVs. Recurrent data shows that EVs equipped with heat pumps experience half the range loss compared to those relying on traditional electric resistance heaters. While heat pumps are highly effective in moderate cold, their performance diminishes in extreme cold, highlighting the need for further battery technology advancements for optimal performance in all climates.
Updated: 2 hours agoCold winters are bad news for EV batteries. But with a heat pump - the samethat helps buildings stay warm with less energy - electric cars can run longer in freezing temperatures.
“The concerns for EV drivers around winter weather are quickly decreasing,” said Andy Garberson, who heads research at Recurrent. Generally, EVs that come with heat pumps did better in the cold - but not always. There are other factors, such as battery design, that pushed some models up or down in the rankings, Garberson said. Why do EVs lose range in the cold?
The traditional way to turn battery power into warmth is electric resistance heating, where the car runs a lot of electricity through a coil that heats up and warms the air around it. But heat pumps work differently - basically, moving existing heat around instead of creating it from scratch - which allows them to warm up a car while using much less battery power.
