The family of a young Queensland university student who accidentally ingested rat poison while on exchange in Taiwan have provided a new update on his condition.

Alex Shorey has been fighting for his life after consuming superwarfarin just before Easter while completing an exchange program at Taipei’s Tamkang University.

A GoFundMe page was set up by his aunt Elizabeth Shorey-Kitson, which managed to secure an enormous $208,682 before it was closed down. “From the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU. We don't really have the right words to express our immense gratitude, but please know how much your kindness and care have helped us in so many ways.

Ms Shorey-Kitson said the student had been in and out of hospital in Taiwan since Good Friday, and had been admitted to ICU after going into hypovolemic shock on the 18th of April.
