I cherish my growing up days there, the joys and travails of my childhood, and the people who made it so memorable. And such feelings for this little town are shared by quite a few in my extended family, surprisingly, although they are not Muarians. Before going to the villa that day, I decided to detour a little to meet my dear former teacher, Madam Kulwant Kaur. She was delighted to see me and my family, and we were treated to delightful masala tea and a variety of sweetmeats. I was overwhelmed as it had been more than 50 years since I last saw her. I was glad to see that she was still bubbly and energetic despite being in her 80s.The next stop was the villa itself. One of my cousins, who was the mastermind, had planned the whole trip.
As we stopped at every building, tales and events related to each were narrated by the older family members which included me. One thing is for sure: Many interesting episodes were unravelled and it helped throw light on the lives of the elders in the family, who are no more: Their childhood and their struggles, pre- and post-World War II. More importantly, there was a clearer understanding of our roots.
