A former member of the national rowing team and Temple University's rowing coach said they rescued a driver who crashed in the Schuylkill River off Kelly Drive in Philadelphia.
A rower and a college rowing coach said they helped rescue a driver who crashed into the Schuylkill River off of Kelly Drive in Philadelphia Friday afternoon. NBC10 responded to the 2200 block of Kelly Drive near the Gillin's/St. Joseph's University Boathouse around 12:30 p.m. and spotted a car that was submerged in the water as well as a large police presence.
Libby Peters, a former member of the U.S. National women's rowing team, and Rebecca Grzybowski, the head coach of the Temple University women's rowing team, told NBC10 they were in the area filming a documentary when they heard the sound of the car crashing into the water.
"We just heard a huge splash and kind of a commotion and everyone went running, so I came out and saw a car in the middle of the river. Before I knew it, my friend was in the water swimming towards it," Grzybowski said.
"I honestly just wanted to make sure everyone was OK, and in that moment you're like, 'What can I do'? " Grzybowski said. "I just did what I thought needed to be done in that moment. "The two women said they then managed to get the man out of the car and bring him over to safety.
"A few other swimmers ran into the water with some life jackets and swam out, thank God just in time because I couldn't keep him awake and just as they got there, they were able to put some life jackets underneath him and underneath his head," Peters said. When asked what went through her mind before jumping into the water, Peters said she didn't think twice.
"I was just trying to get to him. I just kept thinking, 'That car is going to sink,'" Peters said. "He needed help and somebody had to get to him. "
