Marc Maron has released an emotional tribute to his late partner, Lynn Shelton: “I loved her. A lot. And she loved me, and I knew that”
that they were testing “the parameters of our intimacy.” In the week leading up to her death, Shelton had been suffering strep throat-like symptoms, Maron said, which led her to get a test for COVID-19. The test was negative, but she continued feeling sick and scheduled a doctor’s appointment for that Friday.
The night before the appointment, Shelton collapsed in their home and was taken to two different hospitals for care. Maron went into detail about her condition on the podcast, noting that she was anemic and had internal bleeding, among other issues. “They tried very hard at two hospitals that were amazing,” Maron said. “They eventually had to let her go.”
It’s incredibly difficult to hear Maron recount the events of that wrenching day—but recount them he does, determined to bear witness to her final hours. As istradition, he also recorded a brief backstory to his interview with her in 2015, explaining that he initially wasn’t sure if the two of them were going to get along because Shelton was acquainted with his ex-wife. However, as Maron noted, their first meeting was seamless, and they had an instant connection.
“I was definitely a better person when I was engaged with her—as a comic, as a guitar player, as a human, as a lover, as everything,” he said. “I was better in Lynn Shelton’s gaze…you can bear witness to this. This is me meeting Lynn Shelton, really for the first time.”
