'When the doctor tells you to shave, do it; cuz he’s gonna come at your balls with a dry disposal razor if you forget.'
Sometimes, perusing the internet, it seems at times that a concerning number of those among us are simply not maintaining proper hygiene. Sometimes, people are just neglecting to wash themselves, but other times, they simply haven't been taught properly.
Improper hygiene might be able to be hidden from most, but there are a key few human beings for whom it will always become apparent: medical professionals. Our doctors, nurses, dentists, and other healthcare workers come to know the most intimate details about our lives, including how well we do or do not maintain our hygiene. So, recently, I decided toTheir answers were varied, to say the least. So, without judgment, and with the hope that it will entertain at least some of you and maybe even help a few of you out... here are the hygiene practices that medical professionals most dearly wish we would remember to employ: "Please, people, if you're going to have an abdominal surgery, clean out that belly button. As a 25-year surgery nurse, the only thing that makes me gag is digging a solid bean of debris out of a neglected button. It's really smelly.""Wash. Your. Belly Button!!! Or there will be a 'rock' composed of dead skin cells, body oils, lint, and soap scum in there that smells like a dead goat's ass.""Robotic abdominal surgeon here — clean your innie belly buttons! We have to sterilize your abdomen before starting the surgery...which frequently includes cleaning years of dirt/lint out of the belly button." "Ladies, if you are in the 'larger breast' category, please, please remember to clean underneath those babies! Same goes for any size breast, really. I won't even go into what we find underneath breasts…absolutely disgusting! And the smell!" "I understand that for some people, bodily hygiene ranges from difficult to impossible, whether it be mental health struggles, housing issues, or physical limitations. I can empathize. However. Please at least swipe on deodorant and brush your teeth — or heck, at least mouthwash — before your appointment if you can. Please.", that has moved from a patient's vagina to their uterus, tubes, or ovaries. Their privates will smell like rotting fish, I'm not joking." "When the doctor tells you to shave, do it; cuz he’s gonna come at your balls with a dry disposal razor if you forget." "I've been complaining since prepandemic about people coughing without covering their mouths. It's like as soon as someone is in the patient role, they lose their manners and dehumanize the healthcare professionals in their close vicinity. And in the pandemic, COVID-positive patients seemed to think it was fine just because we had PPE on." "Uncircumcised men have to retract their foreskin to wash their penises properly. Not doing so can cause recurrent yeast and bacterial infections in their partner's vagina. Not washing properly is also a cause of UTIs for men.""As a healthcare worker, no one cares if you are circumcised or not, but if you aren’t, please clean under your foreskin! I cannot describe to you the smells that radiate through the whole room when you are trying to cath a male who has dick cheese coming out as you try to clean for prep.""I wish my patients would understand that by reducing acid intake and spending 7-10 minutes per day on their oral health, they could save themselves 7-10 hours with me, plus $7,000 to $10,000. The added bonus is their reduction of oral pain and systemic infections!""Wash and check your feet, particularly if you have diabetes or numbness in your feet/toes. I cannot personally believe the number of legs/feet I've seen straight up chopped off because people didn’t look at their dang feet for wounds and got infections that went to their bones. Do you know what happens when it gets to the bone? We chop it off.""Things that could be solved with a little antibiotics and a hyperbaric chamber are now full-blown issues that can and will make you lose your leg. Once you lose your leg or foot, your chance of more infections and death goes up by a lot, not to mention your ability to move is limited, which makes it more likely for you to get wounds from sitting all the time, which — you guessed it — ALSO causes infection in the bone. So look at your feet, and please take care of your diabetes. In addition to making you lose your limbs, it can also give you permanent erectile dysfunction that won't respond to meds. Not to mention heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease, though funnily enough, most people seem to care more about their ability to have sex.""Family doctor here, I assume you brush your teeth before your dentist appointment. How about similar courtesy before getting your pap?""EMT here: take care of your dang feet. And if you have an older loved one in your life, please make sure their feet are taken care of. As people get older and develop neuropathy in their feet, or it gets harder to bend down and take care of their feet, they get neglected and get really nasty. Think scraggly toenails that snag on everything and anything, skin flakes à la Parmesan cheese that flake off and get everywhere , or rotting, maggot-infested toes that kind of snap off at a certain point because no one bothered. You don’t need to get a pedicure every month, but please, in the name of whatever you find holy, take care of your feet.""Won't date a dude if he doesn’t floss or vote. You want to complain about the state of the country, but didn’t vote? Get outta here.""Keep your surgical wounds clean. Do what your surgeon tells you to do, and please read your post-op instructions. If they say to keep it covered, keep it covered. You'd be surprised at how many people believe doctor Google over the actual doctor.""When someone is admitted to the hospital, the nurse has to do a full skin and head-to-toe assessment. I was with a rather rotund patient and had to clean in between the folds of her abdomen. As I was wiping with a washcloth, a whole bunch of brown chunky material came off. I asked her what it was and she said, 'Oh that's where my Kit-Kat went.""As an outpatient wound care nurse, here are a few tips. 1) check and clean your feet DAILY. 2) funk odors are not normal and require follow-up from your provider 3) if you are a larger person, PLEASE clean in between and under each skin fold.""Not a medical professional per se, but a clinical child psychologist for 25-plus years. Sitting in a small office with a young client and their parent for an hour, poor hygiene becomes apparent, and the smells intensify. Please shower, wash your undercarriage, brush your teeth, and wear relatively clean clothes. It takes at least an hour to get that cheese-ass smell out of my chairs and office, and it’s not considerate of other patients.""Dental professional here. Six-month cleanings are so important. It's where we can check up on your gum tissue health, take X-rays of all your teeth to make sure we're not missing decay or deep periodontal pockets. You might be doing a phenomenal job at home flossing and brushing , but we hygienists can reach and remove tartar that your flossing and brushing might miss. The cost of a cleaning is cheaper than lifelong periodontal problems because you kept putting off your prophylaxis."Well, that was intense. If you have thoughts, feel free to vent all your feelings in the comments. Or, you can leave your own thoughts on what hygiene patients would do well to remember — especially if you're a healthcare professional! I love to read them. And who knows — your comment could be included in an upcoming BuzzFeed article.
