is reporting that cases of COVID-19 have lowered across the state over the past few months, while cases of RSV and the flu have steadily risen. That’s according to a respiratory virus snapshot dashboard, tracking all three viruses statewide.
State Epidemiologist Joe McLaughlin said, “What we’re seeing in Alaska mirrors what’s happening nationally. So COVID activity is decreasing, influenza is starting to increase and RSV activity is increasing at an even more precipitous rate than influenza.” McLaughlin says the state’s pertussis epidemic, more commonly known as whooping cough, is trending down.
“The whole nation has seen an increase in pertussis cases this year. And that happens typically every three to five years. We get sort of these, what we call ‘cyclical epidemic’ of pertussis. And so you’ll have a big spike in cases that will occur, and it’ll last for, you know, a couple few months, and then it’ll subside, but it’ll sweep through the country.
