Utah health authorities are ramping up efforts to protect residents from rabies after recent incidents involving bat exposures at out-of-state gatherings.
Josh Loftin, public information officer for the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, said the department was limited on what information it could share about the potential bat interaction, and couldn't immediately confirm if they were multiple separate incidents or if the groups were in Idaho as part of a single, larger event.
"Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear, so we take all potential exposures very seriously," according to a statement from DHHS. Health officials emphasized that bat bites or scratches may go unnoticed due to their small size, putting individuals who have been around bats — even while sleeping — at risk of exposure.
