NSTnation Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah today cautioned that a 'rapid test kit' (RTK) being sold in the market could not help with the early detection of Covid19.
He said this was because human antibodies only appear after five to eight days following the coronavirus infection.
“Therefore, RTK is not recommended for the purpose of diagnosing Covid-19,” he said during a daily press conference on Covid-19. Dr Noor Hisham said laboratory tests conducted at government health facilities for Covid-19 infection are using the Real-Time Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction technique.“Therefore, a positive Covid-19 rRT-PCR test means that the individual has been infected with the Covid-19 virus.”
Yesterday, it was reported that a company was set to bring in a Covid-19 test kit for the Malaysian market, pending approval from the government.
