Health budget allocation shows health portfolio has been underfunded for many years
Health Minister Joe Phaahla has welcomed the budget of R23 billion, saying it would address the equipment and infrastructure challenges at public healthcare facilities.
He also mentioned that a 488-bed Limpopo central hospital would finally begin construction next month. We are grateful for the steps which the minister has taken with his team to allocate over the next three years an amount of R23 billion, which will be in addition to the current baseline allocation. As the finance minister has said, it's specifically meant to address several shortcomings. A recognition of the fact that the health portfolio nationally has been underfunded over many years.
"We have many years of budget cuts. Even this allocation is basically in the midst of quite several budget reductions. We hope that this will go a long way to address several key areas, as the minister mentioned in the speech, including the human resources for health. Palesa Mokomele, head of community engagement and communications at DKMS Africa, said they had hoped that some of the funds would be earmarked to improve access to healthcare and treatment for those living with blood cancer.In-patient chemotherapy treatment starts at around R3 000 per day and radiation reaches up to R27 000 per session, part of which may come from the patient.
