'He was a sweetheart:' Family mourns 14-year-old boy fatally shot in City Heights [Breaking]
A 14-year-old fatally shot in City Heights over the weekend was remembered Monday as a strong-willed and athletic boy who wanted to be a professional boxer one day.
“He was a sweetheart,” Medina, 25, said Monday afternoon as she stood in disbelief on a sidewalk on Polk Avenue near 37th Street, where her brother was shot a day earlier and where a memorial was set up with candles, flowers and three star-shaped balloons. Enrique was shot around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Police said he had been walking when a group of males approached him and shot him at least once. The boy died before he could be taken to a hospital.Matt Navarre, who lives on Polk Street, said he was reading in bed when he heard “a bunch of shouting,” then eight to 10 gunshots.Medina said her family lives in City Heights, and her brother had been visiting friends Sunday afternoon.
