David Fry tossed the most relief innings for a Cleveland non-primary pitcher in more than 87 years.
Fry became the first Cleveland non-primary pitcher to throw four or more innings since Milt Galatzer navigated six frames in a 14-1 loss to the Washington Nationals on Aug. 26, 1936. The last non-primary pitcher to throw four or more innings in a big league game was Jose Oquendo of the Cardinals on May 14, 1988 against Atlanta in a 19-inning loss.
Fry’s directive from Francona was simple: try to throw as many strikes as possible and get stack outs for the bullpen. It is the ultimate pawn sacrifice move in baseball, knowing that you are going to give up hits and home runs to big league batters, but not worrying about how ugly the box score will look afterward. Francona said it required a high level of trust in Fry to stay within himself.
“I don’t care who you are, nobody wants to go out and just get their brains beat out,” Francona said. “But he’s strong enough mentally to just not overdo it, and he won’t hurt himself.” Watching Joey Gallo launch a 458-foot blast into the second deck in right field during the seventh inning could have tested anybody’s patience.Fry’s velocity peaked at 58.9 mph and his slowest delivery registered at 48.6 mph, per StatCast. He threw the most sub-60 mph pitches in a single outing since pitch tracking debuted in 2015. Prior to Fry, no other pitcher had thrown more than 30 pitches under 60 mph in an outing.
After the game, Fry told reporters that he felt good, physically, but to check back with him on Tuesday.Ad not displaying properly? Become a Cleveland Baseball Insider by clicking
