Mark Edward North lured two boys to his flat where he sexually abused them

Truanting from school can be short-lived mischief. It can also damage a child's education irreparably. But in the case of two young boys playing hooky in Manchester city centre - it left them scarred for life.

READ MORE: A night of shocking tragedy on the roads as man killed, another fights for life and pair left seriously hurt But just 18 months into his sentence, North, now 58, has been granted his wish to be moved to an open prison - the beginning of a process which could lead to his release. One of the victim's, John, whose name has been changed for legal reasons, was 14-years-old when he met North while playing truant from school in Manchester.

John says the damage begun by North was long term. "I went through periods of psychosis, at one point I was wrongly diagnosed as schizophrenic, I was drinking, taking drugs - all sorts. I tried to take my own life - once seriously and the other times it was self harm." Paul, who has now moved more than 100 miles from Manchester, said: "The whole court process was over three years. It would take me five hours on public transport to get to court and often the proceedings were cancelled.

Paul intends to object should North apply for release via the Parole Board. "This is a kick in the guts after the detective worked so hard. What was the point of going through all the stress in court. He was free to be in the public area of court where my family was and it was I that was locked away in a witness room.
