'He never forgot his roots': Tributes to Christian Atsu's work supporting Ghana orphans following his death in the Turkey earthquake
A charity that supports deprived orphans in Ghana has paid tribute to footballer, after it was confirmed he is among the 40,000 killed in the devastating earthquake in Turkey.
The player’s remains were being flown back to Ghana on Sunday, the country’s foreign minister said, “accompanied by his family and Ghana’s ambassador to Turkey.”paid an emotional tribute to the player, who had served as their ambassador since 2016 and was the “main benefactor” of a school and home in Senya-Beraku, Ghana, that supports abandoned children, orphans, chronically ill and those rescued from trafficking.
Atsu grew up in the village of Ada Foah, Ghana. The child of farmers, his father passed away when he was a teenager and his own family had “very little money and very little food” – but his talent for football ultimately took him to the top tiers of the sport, representing Ghana internationally.A spokesperson for the charity added: “Whenever Christian visited Senya, the children and the community were always so happy to see him.
