Karl Stanley, founder of Roatan DeepSea Exploration, testified Tuesday about his harrowing experience diving with OceanGate co-owner Stockton Rush.
Stanley and Rush had known each other for over 10 years, and Stanley was promised a ride in Rush's carbon fiber submersible once it was completed. He explained as much during the U.S. Coast Guard Titan hearing in North Charleston.
Upon returning to land, Stanley emailed Rush for months, expressing his concerns about the submersible's safety. "He knew at that point what the cross-section of the hull looked like. He knew that it had been hit by lightning. He knew that his engineer had quit and would refuse to go in it," Stanley said.
