The Hudson County Democratic Organization, which can make or break a local political candidate, has so far stayed out of the debate over whether U.S. Sen.

Bob Menendez, their bellwether, should resign amid shocking federal corruption charges.“In an effort to give Sen.

“Our party has been and will continue to be focused on the critical upcoming elections for state, county and local office in November, but we cannot ignore the new political reality that this indictment has caused,” Vainieri concluded the statement. “We will continue to make decisions that are in Hudson County’s best interests now and in next year’s elections.”

Menendez has not announced whether he will run for re-election, but he has been defiant in declaring his innocence. In return, Menendez and his wife were lavished with fancy dinners, a Mercedes convertible, gold bars and envelopes of cash, federal authorities said.
