Keanu Reeves in 'John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum'
Earlier this week, fans of the ass-kicking John Wick franchise received the confirmation they'd been waiting for, as another spin-off for the series was announced. Reprising his role as the blind assassin from John Wick: Chapter 4, Donnie Yen will also direct Lionsgate’s as-yet-untitled Caine movie from a screenplay by Mattson Tomlin.
In a statement, Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson said,"It’s truly exciting to be embarking on a strategic partnership with Donnie—he has the vision to bring to life this extension of the John Wick universe in a way that’s authentic to his own signature style, flair, and expertise as a filmmaker." Hopes are high for this upcoming spin-off centered on one of the John Wick universe's most interesting characters. However, following the poor theatrical run of the 2025 spin-off, some will remain skeptical. Set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina was released in theaters in early June last year, with hopes that the John Wick baton could be passed to someone younger than the 61-year-old Keanu Reeves. The film starred Ana de Armas as ballerina-assassin Eve Maccaro, as she begins"her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma." Directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten, this John Wick spin-off also boasted an ensemble including Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, Gabriel Byrne, Anjelica Huston, and Lance Reddick in his final screen appearance. Alas, Ballerina failed to find the same theatrical success as the main John Wick installments, falling far short of doubling its ambitious budget. Against a reported budget of $90 million, Ballerina grossed only $137.2 million worldwide and became one of 2025's more disappointing box office flops. This is a more respectable outcome for a spin-off that earned positive praise from most who watched it.
