A Terminator skeleton in Terminator Genisys
While the Terminator movies haven’t impressed critics or fans in recent years, star Mackenzie Davis’ post-apocalyptic TV show Station Eleven is still an ideal watch for lovers of the dark sci-fi action franchise.
There are plenty of post-apocalyptic TV shows for sci-fi fans to enjoy right now, from The Last of Us to Fallout. However, one of the most iconic post-apocalyptic sci-fi franchises has historically struggled to make the transition to the small screen. Although Terminator’s first TV show, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, was genuinely great, the cult classic was canceled due to its high production budget and low viewership in the infamously competitive network TV ratings. Similarly, 2024’s Terminator: Zero effectively recast Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800 with Timothy Oyphant’s terrifying Terminator proving to be one of the franchise’s greatest villains ever. However, that critically acclaimed show couldn’t win over a large audience, perhaps because of the franchise’s medium shift to animation. Terminator: Dark Fate's Mackenzie Davis Stars In Station Eleven Luckily, viewers who wish that the critically hated Terminator: Dark Fate was better don’t need to look far to find an ideal replacement with the same star. Only two years after she played Grace Harper in Terminator: Dark Fate, Mackenzie Davis took on the lead role in HBO’s underrated Station Eleven. Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Emily St. John Mandel, Station Eleven tells the story of a world devastated by a flu that wiped out almost all of humanity. Twenty years after the end of civilization, this ten-episode series sees a group of traveling musicians come across a cult with evil plans. Davis is superb as the Traveling Symphony’s star, Kirsten Raymond, and she is well-supported by co-stars Lori Petty, Gael García Bernal, and Danielle Deadwyler. A self-referential masterpiece, Station Eleven’s dystopian story involves a comic that helps shape the lives of the survivors eking out an existence after the end of the world. Station Eleven was critically adored upon release, and it is not hard to see why. While many depictions of the apocalypse favor ravenous tribes of cannibals and sand-swept wastelands, the eerie end of the world depicted in this series is very different. Hauntingly beautiful, Station Eleven imagines an immersive, deeply strange, and unsettling world after humanity's end. The bonds between the show’s survivors are deeply felt, but their links to the violent cult pursuing them prove that, even after the end of the world, no one can truly remove themselves from human society. Released at a time when COVID-19 was ravaging the world, Station Eleven was a daring vision of the apocalypse that proved intelligent and original. Station Eleven Shows A Very Different Post-Apocalyptic Future From Terminator That said, the show could not be less like the Terminator movies, despite both pieces of media taking place after the end of the world. That is where the similarities between them end, although Station Eleven’s stately, patient storytelling is something the blockbuster franchise could benefit from. Since both Terminator: Dark Fate’s pulse-pounding storyline failed to resonate with viewers and critics alike, it may be time for the series to take a slower, more thoughtful, and elegiac approach to the end of the world. Indeed, this might have saved Station Eleven’s major competitor, CBS’s 2020 adaptation of The Stand. Like the Terminator movies, The Stand used extensive CGI, time-jumping storytelling, and a lot of constant action to keep viewers invested. However, instead of thrilling the audience, this approach mostly left viewers annoyed, exhausted, and uninterested in the loud, chaotic Stephen King adaptation. In contrast, Station Eleven used a similarly brief runtime to tell another story of humanity’s two contrasting faces after the end of the world, and the show’s slower approach proved far more successful. If the Terminator movies truly want to redeem one of sci-fi’s best franchises, this might be just the place to start. After the critical failures of Terminator: Rise of the Machines, Terminator: Salvation, Terminator: Genesis, and Terminator: Dark Fate alike, it is clear that another chase thriller focused on car crashes and robot battles isn’t the way forward for the franchise. Instead, the Terminator movies must take a page from Station Eleven’s playbook and slow down their storytelling.
