HBO Max has quietly removed over 250 Looney Tunes episodes in the streamer's latest content purge.
In HBO Max's latest content purge, the streamer has removed 256 episodes of Looney Tunes. Warner Bros. series of animated comedy shorts was first released back in 1930, introducing characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, Marvin the Martian, and many others. The series was soon joined by Merrie Melodies, also from Warner Bros., which featured the same characters.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY As part the continued removal of content from HBO Max by Warner Bros. Discovery, CCN reveals on Twitter that 256 episodes of Looney Tunes have now quietly been removed from the service. HBO Max previously had 511 shorts from the series which, after the latest cut, is now down to 255. Warner Bros. Discovery has yet to officially comment on the episodes' removal.
The decision to remove Looney Tunes and the many other shows and movies is essentially a cost-cutting measure from Warner Bros. Discovery. During the transition period as HBO Max merges with Discovery+, Warner Bros. Discovery is able to write off the cost of some shows and movies as part of a larger "post-merger restructuring" effort.
With Looney Tunes only the latest casualty in a long line of HBO Max removals, it's not clear what other fan-favorite shows and movies could also be on the chopping block in the coming months. Warner Bros. Discovery plans to release their merged streaming service, simply titled Max, this spring, meaning it's very likely that more content purges are on the cards before then.
