Mare of Easttown was a big hit for HBO, earning acclaim from critics and being the type of water cooler buzz show that we’ve been missing since now many people are back at actual water coolers.
Its success does not necessarily mean a second season, as it…wasn’t supposed to have one in the first place.
The series was always meant to be a standalone, but because the show was a hit and Mare resonated with everyone, that could change. But HBO isn’t pressuring its creator, Brad Inglesby, and leaving it all in his hands. Here’s HBO’s Casey Bloys on the topic“If Brad felt like he had a story to tell that felt like it would be at the same level, I think everybody would be open to it. Right now, he doesn’t have that story.
We’ve heard this from them before. This is pretty much exactly what they said about a second season of Watchmen, another hit, and that does not seem to be materializing because Damon Lindeloff didn’t have any ideas for it. But we’ve also seen the opposite happen with a show like Big Little Lies, where that was supposed to be standalone until it was a hit and everyone wanted to come back and do it again .
