HBO revealed that the fourth season of Julian Fellowes' period drama The Gilded Age will premiere in the fall of 2026. The teaser highlights escalating stakes for George and Bertha Russell, new cast members and promises of startling plot twists set against the glittering backdrop of 1880s New York high society.

It has been nearly a year since The Gilded Age last aired, and HBO has finally announced the return date for the historical drama's fourth season.

The series, created by Julian Fellowes, concluded its third season with a dramatic cliffhanger: George Russell survived a shooting, made a spectacular entrance at the Newport Ball, and then shocked everyone by announcing he would not work on his marriage to Bertha, opting instead to leave town. That decision set the stage for the new season, which HBO says will arrive in the fall of 2026, though a precise premiere day has not yet been disclosed.

The announcement was accompanied by a behind‑the‑scenes clip posted on X, featuring a host of cast members offering teasing hints about the storylines to come. Cynthia Nixon promises a series of startling plot developments, while Christine Baranski admits she is more excited about this installment than any previous one. Morgan Spector points out that the stakes continue to rise and that the choices made in the third‑season finale will have far‑reaching consequences.

The fragile marriage between George and Bertha is at a breaking point, and both characters must decide whether they can find a way back to one another. Carrie Coon describes Bertha's carefully constructed position in society as very precarious, suggesting that the upcoming episodes will test her resolve in new and unforgiving ways.

One of the brief teaser moments shows Audra McDonald's character Dorothy Scott arranging an appointment with a top‑notch hairstylist, only to turn the situation on its head with a sharp remark to Peggy that hints at power struggles among the women of the era. The cast uses a string of vivid adjectives - sexy, ruthless, juicy, fabulous, thrilling and high‑octane - to sum up the tone of season four, and Denée Benton says she cannot wait to spill the tea on the new drama.

The series, which debuted in 2022 after Fellowes' successful runs on Downton Abbey, Doctor Thorne, Belgravia and The English Game, continues to explore the cut‑throat world of New York's elite in the 1880s. With a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 89 per cent from critics, the show delves into the clash of old money and new fortunes, with Bertha and George constantly maneuvering to improve their social standing.

The ensemble cast returns with familiar faces including Coon, Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Baranski, Nixon, Benton and McDonald, as well as Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson, Jack Gilpin, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Ben Ahlers, Celia Keenan‑Bolger, Debra Monk, Donna Murphy, Kristine Nielsen, Kelli O'Hara, Patrick Page, Douglas Sills, John Douglas Thompson and Erin Wilhelmi. New additions for the fourth season are Elizabeth Marvel, Jim Gaffigan, Dallas Roberts and Andrew Burnap, promising fresh dynamics and story arcs.

Fans can look forward to a season that builds on the intricate betrayals, alliances and ambitions that have defined the series, delivering the high‑stakes drama and lavish period detail that have made The Gilded Age a critical favourite. The fourth season will be available on HBO and HBO Max in the fall of 2026, marking the continuation of Fellowes' richly textured portrait of America's turn‑of‑the‑century aristocracy
