The first NFL draft took place back in 1936. Fast forward to now, and looking over the foreground to the 2023 NFL Draft, not much has changed when it comes to the NFL’s lack of attention given to the athletes that call some of the country’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities home.
While many HBCU alumni are among those whose opinions contribute to NFL draft selections, the goal of organizations, ultimately, is to put the best product on the field. The considerable drop in competition in comparison to the blueblood conferences of the SEC, Big Ten, and ACC has historically worked against HBCUs and lower-conference schools.
Legends of the game initially made their names at HBCUs. From Jerry Rice , Walter Payton , Michael Strahan , and Doug Williams , to more recent standouts in Darius Leonard and Javon Hargrave , Terron Armstead , and Tarik Cohen , the talent is there, it just needs the necessary spotlight. With the 2023 NFL Draft right around the corner, here are a few players I expect to stand out at the HBCUFarmer has met with a multitude of NFL teams already during the pre-draft process. While the decal on his helmet may initially turn teams away, flipping on his tape at 6-foot-3 with a nice combo of speed and power showcases a player that can play at the next level.
