At Alamo Heights, what will come of this teaching moment?
The Alamo Heights football team enters the field Friday, Oct. 8, 2021 before the start of their homecoming game against Floresville.SEGUIN — From the grandstands at Matador Stadium, it looked like any other Friday night in Texas. There were cheering mothers and beaming fathers, sweaty marching bands wearing uniforms designed for cold weather that might never come, and obligatory Frito pies.
Soon, they’ll learn plenty more about how important football can be. About the work ethic and values it can instill.Less than a week before the Mules opened their season with a wildly competitive 42-39 loss to Seguin, a senior member of the Alamo Heights band came home with disturbing news to share. The media had not yet reported anything about an alleged hazing incident involving the football team, but the students knew all about it.
Like others at the game who were asked about the suspensions of multiple Alamo Heights players, the band father did not want his name published, saying, “I have to work in this community.” And to be sure, there were strong differences of opinion in the crowd. The school district has been tight-lipped about both the alleged transgression and the punishment, other than to release a statement saying the incident happened off campus and without coaches’ knowledge. Although there have been multiple reports that up to 21 players were suspended for either one or two games, Rittiman said he could not confirm neither the number of players who missed Friday’s game nor speculate as to when they might be allowed to return.
But it’s worth finding out who did, and it’s worth making absolutely sure adults don’t chalk this up to “boys will be boys” if it’s more serious than that. Many in the community remember that David’s Law, a Texas anti-cyberbullying statute, was named after an Alamo Heights student who died by suicide in 2016.
All too often, the lesson is that if you’re good enough to help your team win, those in power will make sure you get that opportunity, no matter what.
