OAKLAND — A 43-year-old man accused of stabbing two people to death and attempting to murder a third in three separate attacks allegedly called one of the stabbings “a sacrifice” for Jesus and exhibited obvious signs of having a mental illness or delusion during an interview with police, according to court records.is charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder
On July 7, Regan pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to all charges. His next court date has been set for Oct. 11, when a judge is scheduled to receive the report of two medical doctors assigned to evaluate Regan’s mental health, according to court records. A detective also testified that on Feb. 22, 2021 — a month before the stabbing spree — Regan said he was “out to catch a body” to an officer responding to a call about Regan screaming on the sidewalk. Police allege that Regan fatally stabbed Enrique Lazard Ortiz, who died from multiple stab wounds to his neck and the back of his head at about 3 a.m. March 18, in the 22000 block of Main Street.
“He said, ‘I did it for Jesus,’” Hayward police Det. Scott Navas testified, later adding that Regan said, “that he’s the one that people are trying to kill or sacrifice and that he’s trying to get on the other side of the fence and he had to just get one. And then after he said he had to just get one, he yelled, ‘Done.’ ”
