The superintendent of Hays CISD said that future student walkouts 'cannot happen' and announced stricter discipline policies following Monday's demonstrations.S
Superintendent Eric Wright said in a letter to families that the district is implementing immediate changes, including requiring parents to sign out students in person if they wish to allow them to participate in protests.
Students who leave without parental permission will be marked truant, lose final exam exemptions and face Saturday detention. "At a certain point, the original protest messages get lost in what begins to appear as one-upmanship about which campus can out protest the other," Wright wrote. "Further, many also lose the messages in what may start to appear to be kids simply looking for excuses to skip school." Hundreds of students at five Hays CISD campuses walked out Monday to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities, marching to downtown Kyle. The demonstrations were part of broader "Students do have the First Amendment right to participate in protests, but they are not free from consequences," Wright said.by Kyle police in connection with possessing alcohol and not cooperating with law enforcement. Video obtained by CBS Austin shows officers taking both girls to the ground. Kyle police said the arrests were unrelated to the walkout itself.altercation with an adult at the intersection of RM 967 and FM 1626 in Buda. The footage, which only captures parts of the incident, shows a man standing over a girl and shoving other students away. Another minor then tackles him to the ground. Buda police said a verbal argument between a girl and the man escalated into a physical altercation involving multiple people. The man is not a Hays CISD employee. No arrests have been made.Wright also said a teacher was placed on administrative leave and will not return to the district after displaying protest signs with profanity on campus. "A relatively few number of students placed themselves in positions of danger and made horrible choices as part of the protests yesterday," Wright said. "Their behavior has overshadowed any messages that the other protesting students might have tried to convey." The superintendent said the district is hearing reports of potential walkouts at additional schools later this week and warned they would strain resources. "These walkouts are a strain on the resources of the school district and community law enforcement agencies — neither of which has any control over what happens with national immigration policy," Wright said. Gov. Greg Abbott commented on the Kyle arrests Monday, saying "it's about time students like this were arrested" and threatened to strip funding from schools that "abandon their duty to teach our kids the curriculum required by law."Wright acknowledged emotions are running high but said students would be better served by remaining in class to become educated "so that they may affect the policy changes that they believe are in the best interest of society."Austin police have announced changes to their policies regarding cooperation with ICE officers, prompting varied reactions from the community.
