Hayao Miyazaki on the red carpet
Award-winning filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki has revealed a brand new project, three years after the release of The Boy and the Heron. Miyazaki's career has been ongoing since 1963, to the point that his animations and storytelling are beloved by many and recognized in the industry.
Now, he has returned, bringing his works back to life once again. Miyazaki has worked for Studio Ghibli since 1985, after he co-founded the studio with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki. Before Studio Ghibli, he worked at other Japanese animation studios, including Toei Animation for 8 years. At Studio Ghibli, he directed 10 animated films, including My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. Now, the filmmaker has revealed what he's been working on lately, and it's not a new movie. Japanese news outlet NHK has reported that Miyazaki's new project is a series of three-dimensional artworks called"panorama boxes." The filmmaker created 31 panorama boxes, featuring original illustrations from Miyazaki's beloved films, and will be on display at a public exhibition at the Ghibli Park at Aichi Prefecture in Japan this July, and according to Park official Goro Miyazaki, who's also the son of Hayao Miyazaki, children will have"a good view of the panorama boxes." Just a year later, he released his first film with the studio, Castle in the Sky. Since then, he has been involved in many films, though three of them he did not direct, appearing as either a writer or producer. It wasn't until 2003 that Miyazaki won his first Academy Award, when Spirited Away took home"Best Animated Feature." In the years that followed, a handful of his films received Academy recognition. His next Oscar win came in 2024, when The Boy and the Heron also won"Best Animated Feature." Miyazaki has announced his retirement multiple times throughout his career. However, none of these declarations have lasted, thus beginning a pattern of stepping away and then coming back. His first retirement announcement came in 1997 following the release of Princess Mononoke, and one of his most recent announcements came in 2013 after the release of The Wind Rises. As of now, Miyazaki has not made another formal retirement announcement since the release and theatrical success of The Boy and the Heron.
