Just one hotel chain uses hundreds of millions of tiny bottles every year.

. Now, to curb pollution driven by tourism, lawmakers are considering a bill that would order hotels to provide toiletries in bulk dispensers instead of single-use plastic bottles.

“There was a research study that was done that over 300,000 pieces of single-use plastic are used by like one sort of general 200 room four-star hotel every month,” Surfrider Foundation Hawaii Regional Manager Lauren Blickley told KHON2. She also said that plastics are “not able to biodegrade in any way, shape or form and the vast majority of them, especially when you’re looking at the hospitality industry, are not being recycled.

Once they’ve been used, these plastic containers will usually end up in the state’s landfill. Trash on Oahu also gets burned for electricity at H-Power, a waste-to-energy facility, but it still releases harmful chemicals in the environment, Bickley argued.
