Hawaii’s land board says it will hand over state land on Maui to be used for a wildfire memorial and fire debris disposal
FILE - A general view shows the aftermath of a devastating wildfire in Lahaina, Hawaii, Aug. 22, 2023. Federal authorities have started removing hazardous materials from the Maui wildfires and laying the groundwork to dispose of burnt cars, buildings and other debris. The hazardous materials, including oil, solvent and batteries, are being shipped to the West Coast while the U.S.
The ash contains high levels of arsenic and lead and is now sitting outside exposed to wind or rain, creating hazards for people and pets. Removing it as soon as possible will reduce the risk to returning residents, Agawa said.“It allows the ash from Lahaina, which contains human remains, to stay in West Maui,” Agawa told the board before it voted.
Several speakers said board authorities should be thinking about how the landfill would affect the environment centuries from now, in part because the landfill is just 400 yards from the coast. “I hope that we are thinking in terms of 100 or 200 years or more when the great-great-grandchildren are using this area,” Crawford told the board.
The county said it plans to hold open houses to talk to the public about what the landfill site would look like. Spokesperson Mahina Martin told the board the county has done some outreach but needs to do more.
