First responders said they haven't given up hope that a second man trapped in a collapsed coal processing plant in Kentucky could still be alive.
First responders said Wednesday they have not given up hope that a second man trapped in a collapsed coal processing plant in Kentucky could still be alive.
Officials said during a news conference they are using cameras, listening devices and dogs to search for a man who has been trapped in the rubble of a coal processing facility since Tuesday evening. The more than 10-story building at the Martin Mine Prep Plant in Martin County first collapsed about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. Martin County Sheriff John Kirk said the plant hasn’t been in use for several years and the men were salvaging material from the building when it collapsed.“Kentucky, we have some tough news out of Martin County to share,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a social media post.
Jeremy C. Slinker, director of the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management, said the rescue operation has been dangerous for those involved, but it has not deterred first responders.Slinker also cited the remote area as a hurdle that first responders are working to overcome when it comes to communication. Crews on scene have struggled with cell service since the incident occurred.
Beshear declared a state of emergency to mobilize resources to the area and said he will share more information as it becomes available.
