SAN ANTONIO - Haven for Hope celebrated the one-year anniversary of their young adult program on Friday.
The program provides designated sleeping areas and case management for young people aged 18-24 affected by homelessness. They also provide individualized help to people as they transition to new housing. Since the program started, nearly 200 young adults have been served. Eleven have obtained their GED and 38 have left the program after finding permanent housing. That's more than double the number last year."When we asked young adults in the community that had been at Haven previously and hadn't stayed for a long length of time why they wouldn't, they said that they felt preyed upon. They felt uncomfortable not having their own space, their own age group.
Burdon says most young adults stay an average of 67 days. During this time, case managers are able to meet with them and help them find a way forward.
