The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is looking for a moose with a tangle of blue electrical cords wrapped around both antlers.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is looking for a moose with a tangle of blue electrical cords wrapped around both antlers. The young bull was first spotted about a week ago in a neighborhood near Campbell Lake and residents in the area have spotted him several times since.

Wildlife biologist Nick Docken said the moose can eat and appears to be in good health, but there is concern that the cords could be compromising its vision. “It’s at a high risk of getting hit by a car if he doesn’t have that peripheral vision, so that’s a safety risk for that moose,” Docken said. “And all those dangling loops of cord, the way it’s wrapped, he could get hung up on something and he could get tangled to a fixed object.” It’s not unusual for moose to occasionally get tangled up in foreign objects during mating — or “rutting” — season, which Docken said is just starting. Bull moose fight to show their dominance and often rub or polish their antlers on inanimate objects. “Soccer nets, electrical cords, swing sets, all sorts of random objects that we find them getting tangled up in,” Docken said. He urged homeowners to clear their yards of objects that could endanger moose, and said people who spot an animal that is tangled or stuck should definitely “Don’t try and go and free that moose because they are big, powerful, dangerous animal,” Docken said. “Just call your local Fish and Game office and we will come help with the situation.”Public Media Cuts: State nonprofit raises $3.5 million to fill stations’ federal funding gapFish and Game is on the hunt for an Anchorage moose with electric cords wrapped up in its antlers
