That register skews. It amplifies urgency, certainty, reassurance, enthusiasm, hatred. Ambivalence, sadness, the slow recognitions that resist easy naming—these get compressed or erased.

The particular gesture. The phrase that only makes sense if you were there. AI-mediated rituals tend toward generality. The birthday message drafted with AI assistance.
The condolence note shaped by a language model. The commemorative post optimised for engagement. Each softens into the generic. The group still performs the ritual.
The emotional anchoring is watered down, dwindling into obsolescence.are universal needs that are culturally and politically situated, whereas the common denominator that AI offers to address these needs is a particular cultural settlement, dressed as universality. Top-down regulation—the leader who reframes a crisis, the institution that prescribes a ritual—retains identifiable human authors. But much of what actually holds groups together is emergent: the way a community restructures around someone who holdswell, the shared reinterpretation that arises organically through conversation.
In a hybrid context, that emergence is happening through recommendation architectures, content filters, and AI-generated summaries. The organic conversations still occur. Being cognizant of the interplays that shape emotion regulation in a hybrid setting changes what we decide to pay our attention to, where, and when. Here is how to start. Pause before automating emotional moments. The condolence message, the team check-in after a hard week, the anniversary acknowledgement—these are where AI assistance hollows out what it appears to help.
The few extra minutes of unmediated effort are doing more work than they appear to be. Notice what your own and your group’s emotional vocabulary actually is. Every human being, every group has a specific language for holding difficulty—particular phrases, references, rhythms of acknowledgement. AI-assisted communication erodes that specificity.
Naming preserves it. While generics are fast and efficient, specifics land and stay. Collectives that invest in the particular—the real story, the inside reference, the handmade gesture—are maintaining something that scale and speed actively erode. Ask who shaped the emotional environment before trusting it.
Recommendation feeds, AI-generated summaries, and curated content are increasingly participating in how a group feels. Accepting that without resigning yourself to it passively starts by making these influences visible. Asking “What are the formulations that surfaced this? ” is a form of cultivating self-awareness.
Build double literacy and act with shared responsibility. Human literacy—understanding and cultivating natural intelligence—means knowing how you and your group regulate emotion currently and understanding how the underpinning dynamics can be influenced proactively. Algorithmic literacy—comprehending and critically engaging with AI systems—means recognising when those conditions are being quietly eroded. , reducing the range of emotions.
