Abe Haskins becomes the first Houston Academy wrestler to qualify for the state tournament in two years. The freshman's impressive performance at the Class 1A-4A South Super Section Tournament secures his spot in Huntsville for next week's championship. Other local schools also saw success at the meet, with Northside Methodist Academy's Wyatt Paramore and Charles Henderson High School's Brandon Mosley and Henry Grenon each earning victories.
Abe Haskins etched his name in Houston Academy history as the first Raider to qualify for the state wrestling tournament in two years. Placing fourth at the Class 1A-4A South Super Section Tournament on Friday, Haskins secured his spot in next week's state championship in Huntsville. Haskins' journey to the state tournament was marked by both triumphs and setbacks.
He started strong, pinning Thomasville's Paxton Kennedy and Escambia County's Justin Gross in the first period of their respective matches. However, his momentum stalled in the semifinals against Reeltown's Justin Thomas, who secured a 17-2 technical fall victory, sending Haskins to the consolation bracket. Undeterred, Haskins rallied, winning a nail-biting 9-7 match against Cleburne County's Jacob Biggers to advance to the third-place match. In a heart-stopping finish, Haskins won the match on a two-point near fall in the final seconds, breaking a 7-7 tie after conceding a stalling point with 24 seconds remaining. Despite his valiant effort, Haskins ultimately fell short of a podium finish, losing the third-place match to Tallassee's Dylan Price via a first-period pin. Haskins wasn't the only Houston Academy wrestler who made their mark at the South Section meet. Jake Blevins, an eighth grader, went 2-2 in the 138-pound weight class, claiming victories through a forfeit and a first-period pin. Emmett Payne, a junior, secured a 16-1 technical fall win over Bayshore Christian's Chase Harris in the 132-pound division. Jonah Beaver, a sophomore, earned a 19-3 technical fall victory over Cleburne County's Greyson Farr in the 150-pound weight class. Miller Rane, also a sophomore, secured a third-period pin over Dora's Zamarcus Robinson in the 157-pound division. Owen Bright, a seventh grader, competed in the 175-pound weight class. As a team, Houston Academy placed 22nd out of 28 teams with 36 points. Three other local schools also sent wrestlers to the Class 1A-4A South Section meet. Northside Methodist Academy had three wrestlers – Wyatt Paramore, Zane Jones, and Nathaniel Gaskins – compete. Paramore, an eighth grader, secured a pair of second-period pins, while Jones and Gaskins each suffered two first-period pins. Charles Henderson High School sent three wrestlers to the Class 5A South Section meet. Senior Brandon Mosley and freshman Henry Grenon each won a match, with Mosley pinning Valley's Dallas Arnett and Grenon pinning Ramsay's Alijah Wilson. The Trojans finished 11th out of 12 teams with six points. David Dawson, the third Charles Henderson wrestler at the meet, went 0-2 in the 132-pound weight class.
