James Gunn teases the possibility of a pre-existing relationship between Superman and Batman in the new DC Universe, sparking fan speculation about their first meeting.

David Corenswet 's Superman and the DCU's Batman have already shared the screen, albeit in animated form as cameos in James Gunn 's Creature Commandos, the inaugural project of the new DC Universe. While Batman has a confirmed movie in development, Superman will grace the big screen first with Gunn's Superman film hitting theaters in just a week. A surprise Batman appearance in the film is highly unlikely, as DC Studios is still in the early stages of casting the new Bruce Wayne.

The studio's current focus is on Matt Reeves' The Batman – Part II, scheduled for a later release. In a recent interview with Extra TV, James Gunn revealed that he hasn't yet read the script for Reeves' Batman sequel. However, he playfully teased how David Corenswet's Superman might react to encountering Batman, suggesting that 'We don't know he hasn't already seen a man dressed as a bat.' Gunn's comment implies that the DCU might still be determining which heroes have crossed paths before the official cinematic start. In Gunn's Superman movie, Corenswet's Man of Steel collaborates with the Justice Gang, which includes Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. They operate out of the Hall of Justice under Maxwell Lord. This establishes that Superman has already met other DCU heroes before his first on-screen appearance with the public. This leaves the possibility open for Superman and Batman to have worked together previously, as Gunn alludes to. The director further explained that Superman would view Batman as a kindred spirit, suggesting a likely friendship between the two. The DCU's deliberate world-building through projects like Creature Commandos, Superman, and upcoming films is exciting. Corenswet's Clark Kent has already been Superman for several years before the film's narrative begins, making it plausible for him and Batman to have met. Given that The Brave and the Bold movie will feature Damian Wayne and other Bat-Family members, indicating Batman's established presence in this universe, it's reasonable to assume Batman, with his detective skills, would have investigated Superman to assess any potential threats. The DCU showing their first encounter, even if it occurred off-screen, would be a compelling addition to the storyline.
