Miss Alabama 2022, Lindsay Gaines Fincher, is among 51 contestants competing for the Miss America crown this year. A winner will be named Thursday. “I think it’s time we bring the Miss America crown to Alabama,” Fincher said. “I think it’s overdue.'

Heather Whitestone, an Alabama native, was named Miss America 1995. Whitestone lost her hearing at age 18 months, due to a severe ear infection. Inspired by the life of Helen Keller, she learned to overcome obstacles, was an achiever in school and fell in love with ballet during her youth. In college, she won the title of Miss Jacksonville State University, then moved on to become Miss Alabama 1994.

She has written four books, including 1997′s “Listening With My Heart.” Whitestone marriedYolande Betbeze, of Mobile, Ala., walks on the runway after she is crowned Miss America 1951 at Atlantic City, N.J., on Sept. 9, 1950. The 21-year-old Miss Alabama won the title among 54 contestants. Betbeze, a Mobile native, won Miss Torch in her hometown, then went on to win Miss Alabama 1950.
