Harvard University agreed to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism and invest in antisemitism research and education.
Harvard University reached a settlement on Tuesday regarding two lawsuits alleging antisemitism on campus. The lawsuits, filed by the activist groups Students Against Antisemitism and the Brandeis Center, claimed that the university had failed to uphold its commitment to providing a safe learning environment for Jewish students. The complaints surfaced in the wake of widespread pro-Palestine demonstrations on many college campuses following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.
Harvard, like several other institutions, faced criticism for what some perceived as an inadequate response to the demonstrations and alleged instances of antisemitism. As part of the settlement, Harvard agreed to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Association’s definition of antisemitism, which characterizes it as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews.” The university also pledged to invest additional academic resources into studying antisemitism and to publish an online FAQ document clarifying that Jewish and Israeli students are protected under the school’s non-discrimination and anti-bullying policies. This FAQ will explicitly state that actions violating the non-discrimination policy against Jewish or Israeli individuals can also constitute a violation if directed towards Zionists. A Harvard spokesperson emphasized the university's commitment to ensuring its Jewish community feels embraced, respected, and able to thrive on campus. They stressed that Harvard is dedicated to confronting antisemitism and implementing robust measures to maintain a welcoming and safe environment for all students
