We learn eventually that Victory is a VR simulation. In order to exist there, men in the real world kidnap the women they desire as their wives, keeping their prone bodies in darkened rooms where, unbeknown to them, they are plugged into the simulation, to live with the men in 50s-style marital bliss. From there, Jack goes out to work every day while Alice makes herself and their home lovely for him again, completely ignorant to what is really happening to her.
