Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potter films, offers his insights on the upcoming HBO TV series adaptation, hinting at potential differences in character exploration and visual style compared to the movies.
Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has shared his thoughts on the upcoming TV reboot and how it might differ from the films. Columbus is known for directing Home Alone and its sequel before helming the first two Harry Potter movies, based on the first two novels of J.K. Rowling's popular YA fantasy series. HBO is planning a Harry Potter TV remake expected to debut in 2026.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Columbus discussed the opportunities the TV show has to adapt the series, particularly exploring characters that couldn't be included in the movies. He mentioned the possibility of including Peeves, a character they tried to add in the first film. Columbus also contemplated the challenge of the show either embracing the style of the movies or developing its own unique aesthetic to differentiate itself. He wondered about decisions regarding Hogwarts's visual style and the use of John Williams's iconic theme music.
