There were no shots fired, however, Harrisburg Police felt they were averting what could have potentially been a major incident.HARRISBURG, Pa. — A scheduled Harrisburg fireworks show at Riverfront Park was abruptly canceled this evening after several weapons were spotted by police.

According to Harrisburg spokesman Matt Maisel, on multiple occasions throughout the show, Harrisburg Police officers spotted individuals who they believed were carrying weapons. The first person- a juvenile- officers approached and attempted to run, but was eventually arrested. According to police, he had a glock on him, capable of becoming fully automatic with a 24-round magazine.

The second person- described as an adult man- ran alongside a juvenile and reportedly threw his gun in the river while running across the Walnut Street Bridge. In addition to the captured weapons, individuals were reportedly setting off firecrackers and running. One individual reportedly ran through the area where Mayor Wanda Williams was sitting and fell on her leg. As a result, Commissioner Carter made the decision to empty Riverfront Park and end the fireworks show.

There were no shots fired, however, Harrisburg Police felt they were averting what could have potentially been a major incident. Aside from being furious at what happened, I am deeply indebted to the heroic actions of our Harrisburg Bureau of Police officers. When they spotted potential danger, they ran towards it, and in the process, prevented what could have been a disaster. The City of Harrisburg owes our men and women in uniform our highest gratitude.
