The Veterans Village would displace part of the walking trail that runs through the lot. How to reconnect the trail and pay for it has not yet been resolved.
Harrisburg City Council is scheduled to vote on construction plans for a new homeless veterans complex at its next legislative meeting.
The fenced complex would feature one suite-style building to house up to 64 veterans, in addition to 20 small homes with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and living space. But given the expected high volume of foot and bike traffic, T2T shot that idea down, preferring to run the trail along the northeastern path, according to a press release. T2T Vice President Gavin Naples said this was to accommodate the “safety, dignity and privacy of our residents” in a press release.
One remaining proposal would be to have the Greenbelt Trail bypass the housing lots and the PennDOT building entirely, instead running the trail up Sycamore Street before turning the trail south onto an empty lot owned by Pennsy Supplies and connecting the trail back to city property. Hill estimates it would take around $3 million to do the project — $3 million that nobody has promised to foot the bill for, yet.
