“We want to continue to treat this with kindness and empathy for as long as we can before we have to put our proverbial foot down,” city officials said Tuesday.
Harrisburg city cleanup homeless encampment under Mulberry St. Bridge. Jimmie Brown | [email protected]. January 24, 2023.The city of Harrisburg plans to begin exterminating rats under the Mulberry Street bridge as early as Wednesday, even though a handful of holdout residents still remain in the homeless persons’ encampment.
“We want to continue to treat this with kindness and empathy for as long as we can before we have to put our proverbial foot down,” Maisel said Tuesday. The bridge encampment’s population had been as high as 70 people late last year, according to camp residents and assistance agencies, having seen rapid growth over the past several months.
“We have to address the public safety issue of this,” Maisel said, and “the problem is you’re not fully addressing the issue at large,” if rats continue to breed in the still-occupied portion of the camp.
