Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign is trying to figure out how to navigate progressive policy decisions from her past as she tries to defeat Trump.

Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris campaigns with President Joe Biden at the IBEW Local Union #5 union hall in Pittsburgh on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, 2024. Harris has changed her stances on a handful of policies compared to her Democratic primary campaign in 2020 on issues like fracking and Medicare for All ahead of the election.

“When the Trump campaign highlights those past positions or past votes, it reinforces the idea that our current positions are also going to be far to the left, even if they have changed over time,” said Chris Devine, an associate professor of political science at the University of Dayton. “What they're trying to do is say ‘This is not a normal Democrat. It's a choice between the far left of the Democratic Party and Donald Trump.’ They think that's a winning argument.

Progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who ran two Democratic presidential primary campaigns, said over the weekend that Harris is still a progressive lawmaker but is trying to help herself in the upcoming election. Sanders has been supportive of Harris, and of President Joe Biden before he dropped out of the race, and said that he would do everything he could to help her defeat Trump in November. But he has not been used as a campaign surrogate to this point as polling has found the campaign has more work to do with undecided voters than turning out the Democratic base, which has been excited by the prospects of a younger candidate instead of the president.
