Kamala Harris says Trump and Vance are abusing the public's trust with anti-Haitian 'lies' and 'tropes'
Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris is interviewed by members of the National Association of Black Journalists at the WHYY studio in Philadelphia, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024. COLUMBUS, Ohio – It’s a “crying shame” that former President Donald Trump’s words at a debate have put the city of Springfield in a place where elementary students have been evacuated from multiple schools amid an outbreak of bomb threats, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said Tuesday.
“When you are bestowed with a microphone that is that big, there is a profound responsibility that comes with that,” Harris said. “That is an extension of what should not be lost in this moment, this concept of the public trust … It means that you have been invested with trust to be responsible in the way you use your words, much less how you conduct yourself, and especially when you have been and then seek to be again President of the United States of America.
Since the debate, Springfield’s schools, hospitals and government buildings have been flooded with a wave of 33 bomb threats,. The governor dispatched 36 state troopers to the district, responsible for sweeping the buildings for bombs and setting up camera towers in town. While DeWine has said many of the threats came from overseas, Springfield Mayor Rob Rue has publicly connected them to Republicans’ comments about the Haitian community in Springfield.
