Harris County homeowners expecting homestead exemptions should watch mail for postcard confirmation
The Harris County Appraisal District announced Tuesday afternoon that it is mailing out postcards to homeowners with a homestead exemption on file. If they have the right exemptions on file, homeowners can save hundreds or thousands of dollars on their tax bill.
"Homestead exemptions are one of the easiest ways a homeowner can lower their property tax bill," said Roland Altinger, the district's chief appraiser, in a release. The exemptions are particularly important following a period in which many people saw their homes' market values soar. A homestead exemption caps how much the taxable value of a home can rise each year.
Homeowners do not have to do anything if they receive a postcard listing the correct exemption. But if a postcard is returned as undeliverable, HCAD may cancel the homestead exemption and send the property owner a letter asking them to reapply if they believe the agency made a mistake. Homeowners who do not receive a confirmation postcard by mid-January should check their HCAD account to make sure their exemptions are still in place. If the exemptions are not listed, of if a homeowner now qualifies for a new exemption — perhaps because they turned 65 or became disabled — they should contact HCAD at 713-957-7800 or [email protected].
