People line up to vote in the primary elections at the West Gray Metropolitan Multi-Service Center on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, in Houston.More than 1,600 ballots in Harris County were not read properly by the county’s new voting machines because of human error, the elections administration office said, resulting in a slower tabulation process for Tuesday’s primaries.
Voter Sara Cress, who ran the county’s popular elections social media accounts in 2020, said the first page of her ballot became wrinkled in her hand as she filled out the second page. When she attempted to feed the scuffed sheet into the counting machine, it would not take. Secretary of State John Scott said Tuesday evening that his office “was informed” that Harris County would not be able to count all votes by 7 p.m. Wednesday, as required by law. County Elections Administrator Isabel Longoria disputed this Tuesday evening, stating her office had never made such a statement.
