A Harris County Constable deputy is being sued after his police dog allegedly"sunk its teeth" into an unarmed Black man's flesh during an encounter in 2021.Thomas' lawyers provided the Chronicle with the nearly 9-minute police body-camera footage of the attack.
The video shows Johnson's police car speeding up toward Thomas and Gray while the two were seated in a red PT Cruiser. Thomas was in the front passenger seat and Gray was in the driver's seat. Both Bruss and Schultz are also accused of pulling their service weapons and aiming them at Thomas, the lawsuit states, but neither deputy is visible in the footage. The three deputies told Thomas and Gray to get on the ground, and the two men cooperated. While on the ground, the deputies continued to point their guns, according to the complaint. Thomas is the only deputy visibly pointing his gun at the men in the footage.
Thomas lifted his head up from the ground to get up, but before he could stand, Johnson's police dog was lunging at him and biting his right arm. The lawsuit alleges Johnson made no effort to restrain the dog as Thomas cried out in pain.
