When it comes to the softball teams in District 29-6A, there are few, if any, easy games. Friday night's matchup between Harlan and Holmes and Northside Field was a perfect example of the parity in the district, as the Hawks took a 2-0 lead on the Huskies before having to hold on for a 2-1 victory that allowed Harlan to move into second place in the district standings, a half-game ahead of third-place Holmes . 'This district is so tough,' Harlan head coach Alex Rodriguez said.
An infield single by Sydnie Rios and a walk drawn by Melanie Vargas put runners on first and second with Nevaeh Alcantar coming to bat. Alcantar singled up the middle to bring home Rios to get Holmes to within 2-1 and leave runners on first and second with two outs. Alcantar's single chased Martinez, who started the game for Harlan and exited having given up one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 4 2/3 innings of work.
