Michelle Mann DALEVILLE-Happy Monday is the name of the newest restaurant in this Dale County city and business owner Sean Son is happy—not-just-Mondays—to be a part of the community at the gateway to Fort Novosel.
Self-described as a Thai fusion restaurant, Happy Monday showcases the best of Thai cuisine with the inclusion of dishes from other Southeast Asian countries, Sean Son said. “And we have dishes that are definitely ‘kid-friendly,’ such as Honey, Teriyaki or BBQ Chicken and Frankfurter Rice.” Journey to DalevilleSon, who owns Happy Monday with his wife, Mai, have been joined recently by his brother and sister-in-law, Thanpisit and Saranya Panichkul, who came to the United States to help the couple with the quickly growing customer base. Son’s journey to the “City of Possibilities” was a long one. Born in Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok, Son was raised in San Diego where his family moved when he was young. He joined the Army in Los Angeles and was stationed in Hawaii. After a stint in the military, Son moved to New York City, attending college there for three years before transferring to Purdue University in Indiana. It is his wife who is the restaurateur by trade, Son said. “When my wife and I were in Kissimmee, we decided to open a Thai restaurant, but we didn’t know specifically where we wanted to be.” After researching the feasibility of opening a restaurant in Florida and San Antonio, Texas, the couple learned that the restaurant just outside the Fort Novosel gate, was for sale. They traveled several times to meet with the longtime building owner and had the opportunity to buy the building from her. “That’s our journey,” he said. “To be honest, I feel like we were destined to be here.” The name Happy Monday was his wife’s idea, Son said, adding that they didn’t want to add the word “Thai,” to the title because the menu is more inclusive than that. Thai foodThai food, often featuring aromatics like lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and Thai chilies has a reputation of being very spicey, Son explained. In reality, he said, it is a balance of sweet, spicy, salt, and sour. With each dish created as it is ordered, guests at Happy Monday restaurant are asked their preference of “heat” on a scale of one to 10 with 10 being the hottest. Family owned and operatedThe restaurant is family owned and operated, and Son said his goal includes creating a customer-family ambience. “I appreciate the people who came here in the first month of our opening,” he said. “Those people are important to us because after they ate here just one time, they wrote great things about us and it all just took off. “We’re the new kids on the block, probably the newest in town,” he said. “We have created a strong customer base, and we are very happy here in Daleville. “We realize the importance of having good food ready during people’s designated lunch hours,” Son said. “And as a veteran, I can relate to the community.” More informationFor more information about Happy Monday, call 709-4321 or email happymondayrestaurant.com.
