Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U director Christopher Landon explains the storyline of the unproduced slasher sequel Happy Death Day 3.
Happy Death Day 3's proposed storyline has been revealed by the franchise's writer-director Christopher Landon. The original Happy Death Day combined the premise of Groundhog Day with a traditional slasher, turning a victim, Tree Gelbman , into a final girl by putting her into a time loop that resets every time she is killed by a murderer in a baby mask.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The Wrap recently sat down with Landon to discuss his new Netflix comedy We Have a Ghost, but the topic inevitably turned to the unproduced Happy Death Day 3. He revealed that the film, which has been getting increasingly disappointing updates, would have widened the scope and "change gears again." He described the sequel as an "epic apocalyptic adventure," going in an entirely unique direction.
The third movie was going to be an epic apocalyptic adventure with still elements of horror. That was not getting left behind. But yeah, we were going to change gears again and it was going to be bigger. I think that was probably also what held us back a touch because the concept for the third movie is a bigger, much bigger movie.
However, even though Happy Death Day 3 might not happen, the franchise's legacy lives on in a variety of different ways. For instance, Landon himself went on to make a new comedy-horror mashup with his 2020 horror-comedy Freaky, which he co-wrote with Michael Kennedy. That film applies the body swap premise of Freaky Friday to a slasher villain and final girl with comic results.
Outside of Landon's filmography, the success of the original Happy Death Day has been replicated in other ways by Blumhouse's output. This especially applies when it comes to applying tongue-in-cheek humor to PG-13 horror properties, allowing the horror and comedy to complement and deepen one another.
